In 1584, from a voyage by Sir Walter Raleigh that region was known after the Indian chief called Wingina. However latter that year Queen Elizabeth changed the name and gave this British Colony a new name, “Virginia” which means Virgin Queen which noted her status. King Charles II had nicknamed Virginia Colony, the Old Dominion.
