Who is Marisa Tomei?
All actors want to receive at least one academy award during their acting career. An academy award is not only a reward for their accomplishments but it also opens a window of opportunities. However for some actors, winning an academy award becomes a mixed blessing. The standard expected from them in future is so high that they are never able to fulfil it. Marisa Tomei could have easily become one such actress. When she received an academy award which was totally unexpected many people considered it to be a mistake. However she returned strongly to silence her critics with an Oscar nomination for the movie, ‘In the bedroom’.
Marisa Tomei was born on 4th December, 1964 in Brooklyn. Her mother was a Teacher and her father was a trial lawyer. While in school she participated in several plays and was attracted towards theatre. She got her first film,’ The Flamingo Kid’ in 1984. After this she acted in CBS series ‘As the world turns’. She also dabbled in theatre and won a Theatre world award for her role in ‘Daughters’.
She decided to move to LA where success continued to follow her. She won another award for her stage performance. After a brief stint in television she returned to movies and acted in ‘My cousin Vinny’. Her portrayal of Mona Lisa Vito attracted many eyeballs and she earned good reviews from critics. She was also nominated for the category of best supporting actress. However, when she went on to win the award, many people considered her win to be a one off thing. Many even said her name was announced by mistake.
After winning the academy award she had to try hard to keep up with critic’s expectations. Though she gave several solid performances in movies such as ‘Untamed Hearts’ and ‘the paper’ she was unsuccessful in repeating her performance of ‘My cousin Vinny’. Her work in Television Drama ‘My own country’ was appreciated by a segment of audience. Her brother also acted in the movie.
She started the 21st century with an enchanting performance in the movie ‘Happy Accidents’ which was about a man who comes from the future. Though her performance was appreciated her lack of commercial success was laughed upon by the critics. However in 2001, the movie ‘In the bedroom’ changed everything. The movie gave Marisa a chance to flex her acting muscles and deliver a performance which brought her another Oscar nomination. The nomination made the critic silent and gained her many new fans. After this, she acted in many big movies such as ‘Guru’, ‘Anger Management’, ‘Wild hogs, etc. Her 2007 movie, ‘Before the devil knows you are dead’ presented her in new light before the audience. Then her role of a stripper in the movie ‘wrestler’ was also highly appreciated and gave her a nomination of golden globe for the best supporting actress.
